At the beginning of the year we always set bodacious hair goals. Not saying they are unreasonable however we haven’t really assessed if it’s feasible given our lifestyle, commitments as well as personality. After all we can’t do everything ourselves. If we could clone ourselves so one of us takes care of our hair, we would.
We don’t achieve our hair goals because we don’t set S.M.A.R.T Goals
1 – SPECIFIC 2 – MEASURABLE 3 – ATTAINABLE 4 – REALISTIC 5 – TIMELY
Yup, your hair goals should encompass all of the above areas for you to achieve it.
SPECIFIC You have to be very specific so saying I want my hair to grow isn’t clear enough. You can say I want to grow my hair by massaging my scalp. So now you will know what you want to achieve it and how to get there. As well, you know why you’re doing this particular step in your hair routine.
MEASURABLE Next, it should be measurable so it should be quantifiable. Using the same example, your goal will be measurable if you massage your scalp every day. This is easy to measure as there are 365 days in the year. Isn’t that so easy to quantify?
ATTAINABLE Then, your goal has to be attainable. If you decide to massage your scalp every day, can you? This is where seeing if this daily habit/task related to haircare is something that you can do. You can massage your scalp everyday but you can’t do it for an hour. So, you can change the specific goal to 5 minutes in the morning while you’re getting ready for work. Now it’s more aligned to you.
Next, is realistic. One may thinks it’s the same as being attainable however they aren’t the same. The goal may be attainable as with any goal however it’s not realistic. You may be rushing out of the house every morning so doing it on the morning will not work. However, the evenings are better as you usually have more time. As well, your schedule may not even allow you to do massage your scalp everyday.
Then is it timely. What is the time period in which you want to grow your hair – in 3, 6, 9 or 12 months? or even in 24 months? Goals should be timely, so you have a time frame within to work within.
So what SMART Hair goals are you setting this year?
