Contrary to popular opinion, caring for your natural hair is easy once you know what to do. You won’t know how to care for it overnight unless you take the proper steps prior to transitioning. And that’s why we’re here for you. In this blog post, we’ll be sharing with you 5 things to know before transitioning to natural.
1 – Research About Black Haircare – Research what hair products will work for your hair type. Watch the youtube videos, read the blog posts (like mine), and speak with other naturals. This will provide you with a wealth of knowledge that you can curate to benefit your hair journey. The information will teach you how to care, grow, revive and style your mane. In addition, you will have an understanding of the purpose of each hair product then can decide what you think your hair needs.
2 – Experiment – Experimentation allows you to learn what products and styles will work for your hair. Your hair could not like creams or a particular gel. Or, your hair prefers the moisturisation method LCO than the popular LOC method. In addition, experiment with hairstyles. You can’t keep wearing a bun. You could try other styles such as braid outs, twist outs, puffs, flat twists and so much more. Experimentation with your natural hair will teach you what works for your hair thus allowing it to grow to an optimally healthy state.
3 – Honour Wash Day – Many naturals have complained that wash days are long and excruciating. Therefore, they always avoid it like the plague. However, your wash days shouldn’t be taking you 7 hours to wash and style your hair. While transitioning and you are experimenting, you will know what works for your hair. You will understand what shampoo works for your hair, the conditioner that has the most slip and so much more. And more importantly, do not skip out on deep conditioning your tresses for 15 to 60 minutes every week. It will not be time consuming if you take a shower, watch a youtube show or even read one of our blog posts.
4 – Stop Comparing – As they say, the comparison is the thief of joy. One naturalistas’ hair journey is not the same as yours. Your curls will not look like hers nor will the products work the same way. Embrace your natural hair whichever ways it turns out. And, learn what works for you.
5 – Patience – This is the last tip however it is the most important. Your hair won’t grow to waist length overnight, it’s impossible. Hence you have to be patient in your natural hair journey if you are transitioning or just did the big chop. Being patient will allow you to enjoy and embrace your new hair journey. As well as, have more appreciation for the mane that you just birthed.
Your natural hair won’t grow overnight.
But, it will grow once you are being consistent with the tips that we’re provided with the blog post.
